all his help on the Village security cameras. Alex has spent
many hours in the office installing and partitioning hardware

Board
A CALL FOR VOLUNTEERS
Election time is upon us, and three BOD positions
are up for grabs. Problem is, only two members are running for the
three positions. What does this mean? To put it simply: trouble
for this Village. Last election, two members ran and then resigned
almost immediately. This action left WJV Board in a dire situation
of having to find and appoint replacements. According to our Bylaws
article V 3. "If a Board vacancy occurs which, if filled by
appointment by the Board, would create a majority of Board appointed
directors, the Board shall call a special Membership Meeting to
elect a new Director with sixty (60) days...".
Therefore the BOD will have to hold another election, and so on,
until the position is filled thus wasting valuable time and money.
Ultimately this might lead to frustrations and more resignations.
Understand that the functionality of this neighborhood depends
greatly on volunteers- in fact, without them we are left with the
choice of dissolving the membership or hiring a management group.
Either solution will vastly change what many have come to love about
Windjammer Village - our self-governed and -shared properties.
On the other hand, if there are any willing and talented members
that could and would participate if given the right set of circumstances,
then this is your chance. Save the membership from extinction.
Please stop at the Office by May 25 if you want to apply.
Fines and Letters:
Move basketball hoop at least 3 feet from roadway
3 for overgrown lots
2 for skateboarding in pool area
Beautification
Pool Clean Up will take place on Saturday, May 2nd at 9:00am. The
Beautification and Maintenance Committees would appreciate your

his time. Please bring gloves and rakes. All other supplies will
be available.
The Beautification Committee along with the Maintenance Committee
is now working on a plan for the Circle Islands.

by getting the ballots sent out. Should anyone want to help stuff

the Memorial Day picnic.
Please join us for bingo on Wednesday night at 7:30.
Library
We have movies to enjoy. There is a list of over 400 movies and
a sign out sheet to take them. If you have movies to donate (VHS
or DVD), you can leave them in the box and Cathy Boone will see
that they are added to our collection. Unfortunately, there are
a number of tapes that have been removed and not returned - they
were never signed out. She has made a list of missing movies and
posted it at the library. Recently someone donated a tape of the
"1989 Snow at Windjammer Village” where we got 15 inches.
That's available on Tape # 51. She also just added a series of Exercise
Tapes. She goes down to the library a few days a week to keep it
in order and oversee things. She started a Puzzle Table which seems
to be going over quite well. If anything ever needs to be done in
the Library you can call her. She said she enjoys helping out in
that area. Thanks Cathy!
Rules
The Rules subcommittee has finished its task of looking over our
current RRR and making recommendations to the BOD. Please take note
that in the upcoming months Board Members will be acting on the
recommendations and making motions to that effect.
RECYCLING…RECYCLING… WHAT TO
DO??????
I really want to be a good recycler. I care about the planet. I’m
just not perfect about it. Every time I drive into the Windjammer
Compound with “stuff” I get an uncomfortable feeling
that I am not doing it right. I see the sign on one bin that says
NEWSPAPERS ONLY and there I am, knowing very well that I have put
junk mail and Cheerio boxes and whatever other paper products that
have snuck into the house into the paper recycling bin. I spent
my childhood and adult life in upstate New York and let me tell
you I have a lot of Puritan guilt in my system, so I decided to
talk to the expert on recycling in Horry County and get it straight.
I called the number for Horry County Waste and got connected with
Kendra Hooks who got me on the right path.
Kendra answered my list of questions and also answered several
call backs from me. She also pointed me to an internet site, www.solidwasteauthority.org/,
to get more information. By that time, she was probably afraid I
would be calling her back 10 times a day.
Some of you may have kept the list of what can be recycled that
was published in a past WJV newsletter. Duh, I didn’t, so
I am listing the things that we can recycle at the Compound and
also adding what cannot be recycled here.
What can be recycled at our Compound?
Plastics, Metal, and Glass. These recyclables
are put in one section of the large green recycling container. They
call this commingled recycling. This sounds easy, doesn’t
it? Hmmmmm, it’s not quite that easy. All things to be recycled
should be empty and rinsed out.
“Plastics” really means any plastic
containers that have number 1 to 7 stamped inside a recycling triangle
on the container (usually the bottom). No number, no recycling,
this includes the plastic tops; if they have no number stamped in
the plastic they don’t get recycled unless it is a bottle
with a “belly button” (most commonly water bottles and
soda bottles). Styrofoam is not a recyclable plastic.
“Metal” includes aluminum cans as
well as metal cans. Metal tops from metal, plastic or glass containers
can be recycled. Aluminum trays and foil are also recyclable.
“Glass” includes all kinds of glass
bottles, jars and other glass containers. (See non-recyclables below.)
Paper and cardboard. There’s a separate
container for paper products labeled “Newspapers,” and
another for Cardboard.
Paper means not only newspapers but phone books,
junk mail, and miscellaneous paper such as computer paper or other
household accumulated paper but not such things as Cheerios boxes.
This is labeled the “Newspaper” container at the Compound
and no cardboard is to be recycled in this container. Paperback
books go in this container. If you have hardcover books, just rip
or cut the cardboard cover off and put the covers in the cardboard
container.
Cardboard includes corrugated cardboard boxes,
cardboard egg cartons as well as light weight type cardboard boxes.
Lightweight cardboard includes product boxes such as Cheerios, Irish
Spring, gift boxes and other household product boxes. There is a
specific container for cardboard and it is not commingled with the
metal, glass, plastic or paper. Waxed cardboard such as that used
in milk containers is not recyclable.
There is a section for brush and another for leaves in the compound.
Residents of Windjammer can leave their leaves or brush anytime
the compound is open (7 A.M. – 10 P.M.). Volunteers also pick
up appropriately packed leaves and cut brush on Friday morning for
folks who do not have the means to take them down to the compound.
Below is what specifically cannot be recycled at the Compound or
at the Solid Waste Authority Centers:
Plastic bags (at grocery stores, Walmart, KMart)
Glass Cookware
Ceramics
Styrofoam – packing materials, egg cartons, plates or cups
Paper plates, cups or plastic silverware
Light bulbs (CFLs at Home Depot)
Alkaline batteries (AA, AAA, C, D)
Waxed paper
There is also a list on the Solid Waste Authority website that tells
you where to go if you want to recycle other things such as Nike
sneakers (at Nike stores) or other stuff. Now I never thought of
recycling sneakers!!! There are lots of things that can be recycled
or disposed of pretty conveniently at the Horry County Recycling
Solid Waste Centers in Brooksville or North Myrtle Beach such as:
Bulk Items or Scrap Metal (lawn furniture, appliances); kitchen
grease and oil; and motor oil, tires and car batteries.
All this and……. recycling is not mandatory in Horry
County. For me, I’m willing to do this little thing to try
and maintain this lovely world we live in. I look forward to meeting
you in the compound…Happy recycling. Donna Alvarez
